Biography 

 

Betta Chimaobim Edu is a popular Nigerian politician who has been in the government for a few years. 

 

Betta Edu was born on October 27, 1986, in Lagos Nigeria, although her parents are from Cross River State, she was the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation before her immediate suspension after allegations that she transferred over 585 million naira (about £500,000 or $640,000) from the government into a personal bank account.

 

She has over twelve years experience of in building and leading teams in visioning, developing, and implementing life-saving health policies and programs at national and state levels.

 

She held the position of All Progressive Congress’s national women’s leader. Before her resignation in 2022, she served as the Cross River State Commissioner for Health. In addition, she served as the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum’s National Chairman.

 

Education

 

Betta Chimaobim Edu attended Federal Government Girls College in Calabar and graduated in 2001 after secondary school. Edu earned her first degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Calabar.

 

Currently, Betta Chimaobim Edu holds a doctorate in public health from Texila American University, also one master’s degree in public health in developing countries from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, including one postgraduate diploma in public health for developing countries from the same institution.

Betta Edu got her first degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Calabar.

 

Even though Betta Edu did not practice as a medical doctor in 2015, she became the youngest person to be appointed Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Benedict Ayade, on Community and Primary Healthcare. 

 

In 2020, Betta Edu was the chairman of the Cross River State COVID-19 Taskforce before she became the National Chairman of the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum in August 2020.

 

Currently, Betta Edu is a Fellow of the Royal School of Public Health and the African Institute of Public Health Professionals.

 

Betta Edu’s career as a politician started in March 2022, when she became the youngest national women leader of the All Progressives Congress.

 

During the 2023 Nigerian general elections campaign, Betta Edu assured women of a 35 percent affirmative action from President Bola Tinubu.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated her for minister, and she became the first female minister from Cross River State and the youngest minister at the Federal Executive Council of Nigeria in the Fourth Nigerian Republic.

 

In August 2023, Betta Edu was sworn in as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, so she was replaced as the National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress.
